When not working
on my classes, writing economics, working on economics-related Web pages and such, I enjoy bicycling, photography, or just meandering about the Pacific Northwest in search of new-to-me nooks and crannies. Some of the best of my more recent photographs can be seen by clicking on the camera to the left.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to take numerous trips. The best have been at the slow pace of freighter, riverboat, bicycle, or kayak. My favorites are listed here -- there are photos of some of these trips.
- California to New York by thumb (it was a different era), worked on a Danish freighter which stopped in major East coast ports then went to Rio de Janeiro, Santos and Cabedelo (on the Northeast Brazilian coast) before returning to New York; then by thumb through New England to Quebec and back to the U.S. West coast. Four month trip, 1962.
- Rio de Janeiro
to California mostly by bus, some trains, a few DC3s, ferry boats and even an outboard motor boat operated by smugglers. Three month trip, 1967.
- Peruvian and Brazilian
Amazon region by local river boats, plus bus travel on parts of the Trans-Amazonian Highway. Two and a half month trip, 1982.
- Seattle to San Diego by bicycle -- the coast route, of course. Great campsites (particularly in Oregon). Five week trip, 1988.
- Rio de Janeiro to Northeastern Brazil and back by bus. Wonderful smaller towns along the way, great food, even on a $30/day budget for two. Two month trip, 1989.
- Naniamo (B.C.) to
Seattle by kayak. Meandering at a leisurely pace through the Gulf Islands and the San Juans. Camped on sixteen different islands. Five week trip, 1995.
